Welcome
FOCHABERS is a charming village close to the River Spey in the county of Moray. It stands on the A96 trunk road, midway between Aberdeen and Inverness. It is a pleasant and friendly place with a population of around 2000.
Prior to the founding of the present village in 1776, the old town of Fochabers stood a short distance to the north, within the grounds of Gordon Castle. The Fourth Duke of Gordon had been for some time “desirous to remove the present town or village of Fochabers on account of its inconvenient nearness to Gordon Castle”. The architect John Baxter of Edinburgh, already commissioned by the Duke in the renovation of Gordon Castle, drew up plans for the layout of the new town.
About us
Fochabers Heritage comprises a small group of visionaries who thought that wanting to achieve something was enough to get a result! And so it has proved to be! The original aim was to collect and preserve personal photographs and memories of Fochaberians, past and present. What has been achieved is a growing archive of fascinating photographs, papers and maps documenting the history and heritage of Fochabers and the surrounding area.
In addition we have produced an information leaflet “A Stroll around Fochabers” giving visitors a brief tour of the village and its history; two books of memories and photographs, “Memories are made of this – A loving recollection of Fochabers” also “So Dauntless in War”, recollections of Fochabers during wartime 1939-1945.
